We are excited to share that Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm is the subject of a feature story in the October 2024 edition of Georgia Grown, the annual magazine produced for the Georgia Grown Commodity Commission in partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The piece, titled “Preserving the Past, Informing the Future,” offers a glimpse into how eight generations of the Shields and Ethridge families have kept their land (and its history) alive. From the original grist mill to the old cotton gin and two-room schoolhouse, every corner of the farm tells a story.
Susan Chaisson, sixth-generation descendant and president of the foundation that supports the farm, puts it best: “Here, we try to bring back the past—what farming was like, what the hardships were. Our challenge is to keep that going.”
